Fiordland Wapiti Foundation appPrivacy policy
This policy explains what the Fiordland Wapiti Foundation (FWF) app for iPhone and Android collects, why, and the choices you have. The app is used by Fiordland wapiti ballot holders to record what they see in the field and to read the Foundation's hunting information.
What the app collects
- Your account. The email address you sign up with. Your password is handled by Google Firebase Authentication and is never visible to us.
- Your returns. The details you enter when you submit a wapiti, jaw, native bird, predator or rubbish return: title, type, status, block, ballot period, date and time, antler points and tag number. Each return is linked to your account ID and email address.
- Location. The position you pin on a return, and the GPS accuracy when the pin was placed from your phone's location. The app uses your location only while it is open, to place returns and show where you are on the map. It does not track you in the background, and your location is only saved when you submit a return.
- Photos. Only photos you choose to attach to a return, either from your photo library or taken with the camera. The app can't see the rest of your photos.
- Trip costs. If you submit a trip cost, the amount, your email address, account ID and the date.
Offline maps and returns waiting to upload are stored on your phone until they are sent or you remove them.
How it's used
Returns are used to run the ballot's compulsory data programme and to support the management of the Fiordland wapiti herd, native birds and predator control in the wapiti area. Your returns are shown back to you in the app. We don't use your information for advertising, and we don't sell it.
Who can see it
You can see your own returns. Authorised Foundation volunteers who manage the ballot can see all returns. The Foundation may publish summaries, such as in its annual reports, that don't identify individual hunters.
Service providers
- Google Firebase (Authentication and Cloud Firestore) stores your account and returns. See Firebase privacy and security.
- Mapbox provides the maps, including offline maps. When the app downloads map tiles, Mapbox receives standard request information such as your IP address, and an anonymous identifier for your device that Mapbox uses to count active users and prevent abuse. Mapbox's optional usage and location statistics are switched off in the app. See the Mapbox privacy policy.
Keeping and deleting your information
Returns are kept as part of the Foundation's wildlife records. You can delete your account at any time in the app under Profile → Delete Account, which removes your sign-in, and delete any of your returns by swiping left on it in the Returns tab. To have your returns deleted as well, follow the steps on deleting your account and data.
Security
Information is sent over encrypted connections, and access to returns is restricted to your account and to authorised Foundation volunteers.
Children
The app is intended for ballot holders and other adults. It isn't directed at children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
